You Won’t Believe These Photos from the 1969 Woodstock Festival: From Eccentric Spectators to Spellbinding Performances from Names like Jimi Hendrix.
Melanie Safka – First Lady of Woodstock
Woodstock was quite an experience for Melanie Safka. It was her first time performing for a crowd of that magnitude, and it was still early days in her career, so she must have been a bit nervous about being so ‘seen.’
Though you can’t tell from this photo, it was raining cats and dogs when Safka stepped up to the stage that night in 1969. As one of the few solo acts, she performed “Close to It All,” “Momma Momma,” and “Mr. Tambourine Man.” And the rain only served to heighten the effect of her short but sweet rendition on the crowd. So now you know why she’s called the First lady of Woodstock.
