You Won’t Believe These Photos from the 1969 Woodstock Festival: From Eccentric Spectators to Spellbinding Performances from Names like Jimi Hendrix.

Joan Baez – Swing Low, Sweet Chariot

Joan Baez had long been considered as folk royalty. So when she climbed on stage on day one of Woodstock to deliver the closing act, the crowd knew what to expect. And for over an hour that Sunday morning, Baez treated them to a memorable performance that called in the sunrise.

Though she started out alone, Baez was soon joined by Richard Festinger and Jeffrey Shurtleff for a cover of “I Shall Be Released.” And between renditions, she gave the audience a brief background of each song and what inspired her writing. And her pitch-perfect acapella version of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” was a fitting finale for her set.
