Ravi Shankar lights up Woodstock
Ravi Shankar single-handedly popularized the sitar and classical Indian raga in America. As an international superstar, his presence at Woodstock met with much approval from the audience and other musical acts. Shankar was accompanied by Maya Kulkarni, who you can see with the tamboura, and Alla Rakha on the tabla.
For the entire 42 minute-long set, the trio sat cross-legged on a raised platform layered with a carpet. But though he was happy enough to play in the rain, Shankar was less enthusiastic about the association of his music with drugs. Nonetheless, this performance was good enough to be released as a live album the following year.
