You Won’t Believe These Photos from the 1969 Woodstock Festival: From Eccentric Spectators to Spellbinding Performances from Names like Jimi Hendrix.

Arlo Guthrie – Amazing Grace

Arlo Guthrie began his set just as the rain stopped and the crowd settled in for the night. And the fact that it was midnight did nothing to dampen the interest or excitement of the crowd. It was day one of Woodstock; sleep was the last thing on many minds.

As the son of legendary folk musician Wooden Guthrie and an equally famous mother, Arlo was always surrounded by creatives. But his experience at the festival was completely new and unexpected. As he closed his set with a rendition of “Amazing Grace,” it was easy enough to forget that his vocals hadn’t been at their best when he began his performance.
