It’s safe to say that Jimi Hendrix was one of the most anticipated performers at Woodstock. But by the time he showed up with his band, Gypsy Sun & Rainbows, the crowd of half a million had whittled down to less than 50,000 people. But those lucky folks sure got the performance of their lives.
If the name of Hendrix’s band didn’t clue you in, then his outfit should tell you all you need to know. He was a flower child and one of the very best. And his masterful rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” remains one of the most enduring moments of that decade.
